How to Calculate Swim Pace
Swim pace is one of the most important metrics for swimmers and triathletes. It tells you how fast you're swimming per 100 meters and helps you plan training sessions and race strategies effectively.
The Formula
Pace = (Time ÷ Distance) × 100
Result in seconds per 100 meters
Example Calculation
- • Distance: 400 meters
- • Time: 6 minutes 40 seconds (400 seconds)
- • Pace = (400 ÷ 400) × 100 = 100 sec/100m
- Pace: 1:40/100m
Open Water Adjustments
Swimming in open water is typically 3-5% slower than pool swimming due to sighting, navigation, waves, and currents. However, wearing a wetsuit can provide a 5-8% speed advantage due to improved buoyancy and reduced drag.
