Complete triathlon distance chart
"Triathlon distance" can mean very different things depending on the race format. Some races take less than an hour, while IRONMAN-distance events can take most of the day. Every traditional triathlon includes a swim, bike, run, and transitions between disciplines.
Super League / Supertri formats are different — they often use repeated short-course stages and are designed for fast, spectator-friendly racing rather than traditional single-loop endurance events.
| Race Format | Swim | Bike | Run | Total | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Super Sprint | 400 m / 0.25 mi | 10 km / 6.2 mi | 2.5 km / 1.6 mi | ~12.9 km / ~8 mi | First-timers, youth |

Distances can vary by race organizer, course design, swim conditions, and event rules. IRONMAN is a branded race series. Super League / Supertri formats change across seasons.
Full IRONMAN distance
A full IRONMAN is 140.6 miles, or approximately 226 kilometers. It consists of a 2.4-mile (3.8 km) swim, a 112-mile (180 km) bike, and a 26.2-mile (42.2 km) marathon run. The "140.6" name comes from the total distance in miles.
The bike leg dominates total race time. The marathon that follows is especially demanding because it comes after hours of swimming and cycling. Nutrition and pacing discipline are essential — athletes who ride the bike too aggressively often suffer badly on the run.
IRONMAN distances have remained the same since the first race in 1978, when three existing Oahu events were combined into a single endurance challenge.
IRONMAN 70.3 / Half IRONMAN distance
An IRONMAN 70.3 is 70.3 miles, or approximately 113 kilometers: a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) half marathon run.
"Half IRONMAN" is commonly used by athletes, but the official branded race name is usually IRONMAN 70.3. Despite being "half" the distance, it is still a serious endurance event requiring structured training, practiced nutrition, and careful pacing. It is not simply half as hard.
Many athletes use the 70.3 as a stepping stone before attempting a full IRONMAN. It is one of the most popular long-course triathlon formats worldwide.
Olympic / Standard triathlon distance
The Olympic triathlon distance is a 1.5 km (0.93 mi) swim, a 40 km (24.8 mi) bike, and a 10 km (6.2 mi) run. World Triathlon also calls this the Standard distance.
Olympic-distance racing is faster and more intensity-driven than long-course events. It requires balanced ability across all three disciplines. Drafting is legal in many Olympic-distance races, which adds a tactical element to the bike leg.
Sprint triathlon distance
A Sprint triathlon typically consists of a 750 m (0.47 mi) swim, a 20 km (12.4 mi) bike, and a 5 km (3.1 mi) run.
Sprint triathlon is beginner-friendly but can also be raced very competitively. Transitions matter more in Sprint racing because the race is short — a slow T1 or T2 costs a proportionally larger share of total time. It is an excellent format for testing multisport fitness.
Super Sprint triathlon distance
A Super Sprint triathlon is usually about a 400 m (0.25 mi) swim, a 10 km (6.2 mi) bike, and a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) run.
Super Sprint is popular for first-time triathletes, youth races, and local short-format events. Distances may vary more than Sprint, Olympic, or IRONMAN formats because there is no single universal standard for Super Sprint.
Super League / Supertri triathlon format
Super League Triathlon has evolved into the Supertri brand and operates a distinctly different racing format from traditional age-group triathlon. It is not a fixed-distance format like Sprint or Olympic — it is designed for fast, spectator-friendly professional racing.
The signature Supertri League format (used through 2025) consists of three back-to-back stages of 300 m swim, 4 km bike, and 1.6 km run with no breaks between stages. Athletes complete eight transitions during a single race instead of the usual two. The Supertri Eliminator variant adds short breaks between stages with the slowest athletes eliminated after each round.
For 2026, Supertri restructured its professional racing. Pro Series qualifying events (Austin, Blenheim Palace, Toronto) now use standard sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run) on draft-legal courses, with pros racing alongside mass-participation athletes. The Pro Series Final still uses the signature multi-stage format with a prize purse exceeding $800,000.
Supertri E (esports) events use a shorter format: three stages of 200 m swim, 4 km bike, and 1 km run. Do not confuse Super League / Supertri racing with standard Sprint triathlon — both are short-course, but the format and race structure are very different.
| Format | Swim | Bike | Run | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supertri League (3 stages) | 300 m × 3 | 4 km × 3 | 1.6 km × 3 | Signature pro format through 2025 |
| Supertri Pro Series 2026 | 750 m | 20 km | 5 km | Sprint distance, draft-legal qualifying |
| Supertri E | 200 m × 3 | 4 km × 3 | 1 km × 3 | Esports/indoor format |
| Traditional Sprint | 750 m | 20 km | 5 km | Standard mass-participation format |
Supertri formats can change by season and event. Always check specific event details for the current format.
Which triathlon distance should you choose?
Your choice depends on training time available, swim confidence, bike fitness, run durability, open-water comfort, fueling experience, and injury history.
| Athlete Goal | Best Starting Format |
|---|---|
| First-ever triathlon | Super Sprint |
| Beginner with some fitness | Sprint |
| Balanced endurance challenge | Olympic |
| Long-course preparation | IRONMAN 70.3 |
| Ultimate endurance goal | Full IRONMAN |
| Fast technical racing interest | Super League / Supertri-style short-course |
How long does each triathlon distance take?
These are broad estimates. Finish times vary heavily by course, weather, elevation, swim conditions, transitions, and athlete experience.
| Format | Beginner Range | Experienced Range |
|---|---|---|
| Super Sprint | 40–70 min | 30–45 min |
| Sprint | 1:30–2:30 | 1:00–1:30 |
| Olympic | 3:00–4:00 | 2:00–3:00 |
| IRONMAN 70.3 | 6:00–8:30 | 4:30–6:00 |
| Full IRONMAN | 12:00–17:00 | 9:00–12:00 |
| Supertri League | Varies by format | Varies by format |
Finish times are approximate ranges. Actual performance depends on individual fitness, course profile, weather, and pacing strategy.
Why triathlon distances feel harder than they look
The run happens after swim and bike fatigue, not on fresh legs. Open-water swimming is different from pool swimming due to sighting, currents, waves, and race-start crowding. Bike pacing can make or break the run — athletes who ride too hard typically pay for it later.
Transitions add time and decision stress. Nutrition matters more as race duration increases. Comparing race times across different courses without considering elevation, wind, and conditions can be misleading.
Common beginner mistakes
Assuming all triathlons are IRONMAN distance. Confusing Sprint with Super Sprint. Confusing Super League / Supertri with normal Sprint triathlon — both are short-course but structurally very different.
Underestimating open-water swimming. Ignoring transitions as part of the race. Overbiking and ruining the run. Comparing times across very different courses. Choosing a long-course race too early without building multisport experience. Not practicing race fueling during training.
Methodology
Distances are based on commonly used triathlon race formats. Full IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 distances follow official IRONMAN branding as listed on ironman.com. Standard race-distance references (Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic) follow World Triathlon and common race organizer conventions.
Super League / Supertri formats are based on official Supertri and Wikipedia sources current as of early 2026. Supertri formats can change by season — users should verify current event rules.
Mile/km conversions use 1 mile = 1.609344 km, rounded for readability. Finish-time ranges are broad estimates based on publicly available race results and coaching context, not guarantees.

Review and methodology context
Trust matters more when a page publishes benchmark numbers.
These benchmark guides use a hybrid model: reviewed public age-group trend anchors, percentile-style ability bands, and split-level context so athletes can compare total time and where that time is actually being won or lost across short- and middle-distance triathlon.
